Returning to Fantasy Paradise
My main concern as a painter is to investigate the mystery of different places in the existing world and the imaginary world. There are two types, one is a fantasy paradise; another one is hell, which can also be called as Utopia and Dystopia. In this research, I would like to focus on the fantasy Utopia. I have been particularly interested in the places in fantasy novels and movies, such as the wonderland in Alice in Wonderland and the Narnia Kingdom in The Chronicles of Narnia, and I want to explore the similarities between Chinese and Western history and culture on this particular issue. Thereby, to deduce returning to paradise is a continuous action starting from the stage of biblical history till now.
It is believed that the action of exploring paradise is original from the idea of returning to the paradise. I am going to take reference mainly from the well known fantasy literatures worldwide, The Garden of Eden from the Bible, The Peach Blossom Spring, The Chronicles of Narnia and thesis about C.S. Lewis and referring to a few artworks, the painting of the Peach Blossom Spring in the Long Corridor Summer Palace and The Garden of Eden with the Fall of Man by Brueghel J. and Rubens P.P. and as long as some of the movies scenes.
When considering the two words of fantasy and imagination, they can often appear very abstract. Paradise is a fantasy imaginary place, appears in many situations, movies, and novels. Paradise has Persian root; the word denotes the enclosed and extensive parks and pleasure ground of the Persian Kings. The Septuagint translators adopted it for the Garden of Eden, and in the New Testament and by early Christian writers, it was applied to heaven, the abode of the blessed dead. (Pent. 2012)
The Garden of Eden paradise is the biblical ‘garden of God’, is the first typical paradise in general. The Garden of Eden is described in Genesis Chapter 2 and 3. There are all kinds of trees growing out of the ground – trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There is a river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters (Genesis 2:18-19).

In the painting above, it shows the figure of Adam and Eve with other animals in the garden, with a clear blue sky. The painting depicts the moment before the consumption of the forbidden fruit, and the fall of men. From the work, prosperity can be interpreted showing the healthy and plump body of Adam and Eve, along with the bloominoius and gigantic trees and the fruits on it. This is the characteristic of a paradise by illustrating a diversity of ecosystem, therefore indicating God is making an ideal place for us to live, a place without badness and harm, that we called it a fantasy paradise now.
According to the Bible, we humans were originally made, or born, in the Garden of Eden. This is a place originally given to us as it is absolutely perfect and pure. After the consumption of the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the Lord God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. (Genesis 3:23) From long ago, even when no written history existed, people were already striving for ideal places to live in. It is considered that this is the action of return to paradise. It makes me wonder the eagerness of man in searching the way back to Garden of Eden in the real world. It has been a really ancient idea, a yearning can also be found in various Chinese and Western literatures.
From one of the oldest literatures I have studied in this research is The Peach Blossom Spring Story written by Tao Yuanmung. Tao Yuanming was a Chinese poet who lived during the Eastern Jin (317-420) and Liu Song (420-479). He spent most of his life in reclusion, living in a small house in the countryside. He often reflected on the pleasures and difficulties of life in the countryside, as well as his decision to withdraw from civil service. One typical phenomenon of exploration of new places is to alienate him or herself. In The Peach Blossom Spring Story, a fisherman was sailed into a river in a forest made up entirely of blossoming peach trees, during the time of the time of political instability and national disunity.

The expression shìwaì taòyuán in Chinese; the Peach Spring beyond this world, has become a popular Chinese idiom, meaning an unexpectedly fantastic place off the beaten path, usually an unspoiled wilderness of great beauty. It has become a standard Chinese term for ‘utopia’. The painting of the tale on the Long Corridor, Summer Palace is a resemblance to the Garden of Eden. The artwork shows a group of people with young kids and adults, a symbol of family, with a diversity of life stocks. The scene is set in countryside with blossoming trees and a river. The display looks identical to the one in the Garden of Eden. They have an extension of similarities. When compared side-by-side, they both show trees at the background and the river on the right hand side. It appears like the continuation of the investigation of our paradise and utopia.
In the development in the exploration of paradise, wonderland has never been stopped. I am interested in the way people enter the imaginary world – a portal. In most of the stories in western culture, characters usually fall into the place accidentally through a portal. Thus, the prevailing question is, can we ever go back to the Garden of Eden? It is always believed that there is no ‘Utopia’ paradise or any imaginary place in the existing world. Those are not real. But in many films and stories, there is a connection between the two worlds, and a portal usually joins the two worlds together.
C.S. Lewis depicted his experience with Christianity. Linked to his Prince Caspian (1951), which is sub-titled “ A Return to Narnia”, he explores the concept of returning to paradise, pertaining to memory and imagination. They are crucial for the evolution of human consciousness from original to final participation. This evolution signifies for Lewis a deepening relationship with God. (Shezra, K. 2014) In the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis creates and rewrites many text, most famously Spenser’s Faerie Queene, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Dante’s Divine Comedy, etc. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the first high fantasy film I have came across. The plot is set during World War II. The main characters are the Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, with the youngest Lucy’s discovery of the wardrobe to enter the fantasy world called Narnia. The wardrobe acts as a portal to connect the real world and Narnia.
The Kingdom of Narnia is a high fantasy land full of mythical creatures like talking animals –
‘Narnia, the happy land of Narnia – Narnia of the heathery mountains and the thymy downs, Narnia of the many rivers, the plashing glens, the mossy caverns and the deep forest ringing with the hammer of the dwarfs. Oh the sweet air of Narnia! An hour’s life there is better than a thousand years in Calormen,’ said Bree, the Narnia Talking Horse. The land is described as an ultimate, wondrous land.
Another thing I would like to investigate in the research is the action in the fantasy world in movies comparing to the one in the Garden of Eden. One characteristic of a paradise is that it contains something addictive. The forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden symbolizes the original sin. It is then referring to any indulgence or pleasure that is considered illegal or immortal as a metaphor. The mushroom in Alice in Wonderland is the same concept to that in the Garden of Eden. In the movie, Alice in Wonderland, one of the scenes is having advice from the Caterpillar, who is resting on top of the giant mushroom and smoking a hookah pipe.

The mushrooms in the movie are in vibrant colours. Robert Stromberg creates special effects in Alice in Wonderland. He is a special effects artist, his creation of the colourful, almost psychedelic scene, with illusion, is nearly unreal to everyone. Referring to Cole’s digital painting and the scene in the movie, the set up of the chapter is in a mushroom land. The giant mushrooms give us room of imagination. Moreover, with the mist at the background, it creates an even more uncertain look.
Apart from the movie in 2010, there is also the original American animated musical fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Production, also called Alice in Wonderland. It is a typical example of Psychedelic films, this put the emphasis once again on the appearance of psychedelic element in fantasy movie. It is a film genre characterized by the influence of psychedelic and the experience of psychedelic drugs. In Alice in Wonderland, the Caterpillar asked Alice to eat on side of a round mushroom, and asked her whether she wanted to get bigger or smaller. Furthermore, the Caterpillar aggravates Alice’s uncertainty about her constantly changing size. The Caterpillar also may represent the threat of sexuality, as suggested by its phallic shape. One possible world fruit for the forbidden fruit is mushroom. Thus it is proved that this action is likely similar to when the snake asked Eve to take the forbidden fruit, both have complementary approach.
The psychedelics are among the most interesting and ill understood of the psychoactive drugs. In the story of Alice, when the Caterpillar asked Alice to taste the mushroom, it is the action of distracting mind, it produces a variety of complex effects on the brain and mind and makes Alice hesitates, including intensification of thoughts and feelings, alterations of sensory perception, and loosening of psychological defenses, indirectly asserting the offered mushroom is hallucinogen. The action has an illegal, immortal symbolized effect. So, it can be seen that the set up is designed seemingly to the Garden of Eden.
To conclude, it is convenient to see the main points that we discover the mysteries and similarities of the continuation of Garden of Eden, the resemblance of Garden of Eden, in relation to the main elements that are mentioned in the research. It can be seen how both western and Chinese literatures and movies demonstrate the return to paradise. No matter in Chinese’s Peach Blossom Spring, or western literature, the Chronicles of Narnia and Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland, the action of exploring paradise is still developing throughout years and years and become one of the main theme in novels and movies nowadays. It can still be found in elements in hint of our daily life. Yet, is there a paradise called the Garden of Eden in our real world, or can we go back to there, is still a mystery.
