Professional Practice

Pecha Kucha

Pecha Kucha is a simple presentation. It was my first time to participate in the activity, which was the time at the beginning of the semester. I prepared 10 slides of image, and for each image, I talked for 20 seconds. I used to be afraid of doing a presentation in front of people. Since English is not my first language, I would worry about my pronunciation, the fluency of speaking a complete sentence. I was always very nervous before the presentation and being so embarrassing. Until I did Pecha Kucha, since it was talking about art, as long as things that I am interested in, I was so eager to share my work. And because of me not being from the UK, others will understand my situation of build up my confidence. I was thankful to this activity, it helped me overcame my fear.

Workshop - Wood Induction

I had the wood induction in the early first semester. It was my first time to make a stretcher out of wood on my own and I felt so fresh and interesting.

I had a bad experience before the induction, I tripped over and knocked down my painting and broke the stretcher on the bus. The pieces of the wooden frame were literally broken into two parts. I was so shocked and at the same time disappointed. And therefore, I decided not the buy and use pre-made canvas.

During the wood induction, I learn two methods of making the stretcher, one simpler and one more difficult, Making a stretcher takes a lot of time and strength, but it worths. I become more confident to paint on a canvas I made myself and present the work to the people.

Reading Group with Anna Bunting Branch - Gesture

The most impressive reading group is the one with Anna Bunting Branch. The text we were working on is called 'Gestures'. The main context is about a protest against Dana Schutz's painting of Emmett Till at Whitney. Dana Schutz's painting 'Open Casket' depicts the dead body of 14 - year - old Emmett Till. Hannah Black did an open letter to the curator and staff in Whitney Bienmial about the removal of the artwork.

Regarding the series of activities, I think it is a very serious issue. First, at utmost importance, I think Hannah Black doesn't have the night to conduct the protest activity and require the removal of the artwork. Because I think he is not the one suffers. Another point is I think only the family and relatives of the victim have the nights to complain. And the family should already had got mentally prepared when they released the photo. Moreover, apart from Hannah Black, groups in the public have different thoughts among the society. The whole situation is undoubtedly controversial, and along, it became a vicious cycle, white people being racist to black people while black people being racist to white people. That gradually develops into a non-stop social issue.

During the reading group, I got to know the racist problems in different countries since many of my coursemates are international students coming from all around the world. I was so interested in this topic to know ethnic problems in different countries. For my hometown, Hong Kong, we had controversial problems but they are not as severe as racism. And I hope people around the globe have fewer conflicts and be tolerant to each other.

I had the chance to hold the interim show - "62 Hands" with my coursemates at Lewisham Arthouse. It is a novel and new experience for me to collaborate with such a large group to organise the show. The installation and space arranging is the most challenging. I was responsible for some slots of invigilating the show. It was fun interacting with the visitors and gaining the sense of accomplishment. I played the piano the attract more audiences. It was a memorable experience to chat with the audience and introduce the artwork to them. It was my pleasure to be in the exhibition.
